THE WHY

Wild horses and burros are disappearing from the Western United States. Most people don’t know it’s happening.

Driven from their home ranges and torn from their tightly bonded families, they’re being rounded up by helicopters and confined in government pens to make way for subsidized cattle, oil, and mining operations. Today, over 60,000 wild horses are trapped in holding facilities—many without adequate shelter or space and the threat of slaughter looming.

Those who remain on the range live under constant threat. Some are removed during the peak of summer. Others are taken when foals are still nursing. They are chased for miles, separated, exhausted, and sometimes killed. The lucky ones end up in sanctuaries like ours. The rest may never run free again.

This is not just a wildlife issue. It’s about the loss of something sacred.

Horses have an extraordinary capacity to heal—without words, without judgment. You don’t have to ride them or even touch them to feel their presence. Just being near them can quiet the nervous system and open the heart. They reflect us. They ground us. And when they live wild, unbroken, they remind us of our own wholeness. We believe that wild horses belong on the land—not behind fences.

And we believe healing is possible: for the horses, and for us.

Across the West, they’re being chased by helicopters, removed from their home on public lands, and at risk of being sent to slaughter. These animals, so full of spirit and wisdom—deserve better. We believe wild horses belong in the wild, where they can live free and inspire healing in others. Your voice matters.

visit the wild

If you ever have the chance to see wild horses in their natural home—do it. Go quietly, breathe with them, and watch what happens inside you. These animals are teachers. Their stillness is powerful. Their freedom is medicine. And the more people experience that, the harder it becomes to look away from their suffering.
